To Successfully Implement Saudization and Vision 2030 Policies, Invest in Professional Education

Skilled logistics and transport professionals are key to sustainable growth according to leading transport & logistics body, the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) International

LONDON – Saudi Arabia’s logistics and transportation industries are facing a unique challenge: balancing a period of rapid growth with the need to re- and upskill its professionals. According to the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) International, investing in professional training and skills for transport & logistics professionals is key to the successful and sustainable implementation of policies like the recently announced National Transport and Logistics Strategy.

Amer Badarneh, General Manager of the Middle East Logistics High Institute (MELI), CILT’s official premier accredited partner in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, said:

“The growth of e-commerce, the need for urgent medical supplies because of the pandemic, and the issues associated with sustainability have all meant the methods we used “yesterday” to deliver are no longer the methods we need for “tomorrow”. Saudi Arabia needs agile, skilled, and adaptable logistics and transport professionals so that we can realise our ambition of becoming a leading hub in the global supply chain.

“With the logistics sector at the top of the Vision 2030 plan, MELI and CILT Saudi Arabia are proud to have been the first formal logistics professional certification in receipt of a financial subsidy from the government, targeting young Saudis to fulfil the recruiting gap with local talented resources. To go even further to support local market requirements, MELI has also launched Arabic-language versions of CILT’s programmes to create more learning opportunities for the Kingdom’s existing and aspiring professionals.”

Globally, millions of workers will be required in transportation and logistics over the next decade due to increased demand from the Covid-19 pandemic. However, according to PwC, “economic growth is already significantly outpacing talent development, leading to serious skills shortages.” Leading corporations have already invested in comprehensive education programs in Saudi Arabia to deliver knowledge and skills transfer in the rail sector. However, in order to deliver Saudization on the scale required, training approaches will need to be agile and flexible. Compounded with a reduced number of graduates entering engineering, construction and allied industries, there has never been a more important time for investment in logistics training and reskilling.

To help address these challenges, CILT partners with the Middle East Logistics High Institute (MELI) to deliver the CILT professional certifications programme. This programme helps logisticians gain a deeper understanding of the logistics activities fit to their local market operations, based on international best practices and standards. While this programme has been offered since 2010, CILT and MELI have seen an increase in certifications in the last two years, indicating the growing importance that transport and logistics practitioners and employers are placing on professional education.

Keith Newton, Secretary-General of CILT International, said:

Policy commitments to decarbonisation are a necessary start, but if governments are to actually make a difference and achieve net zero emissions, they need to act as bridge between businesses, consumers, and transport industry professionals. Decarbonisation is the single greatest long-term challenge facing the transport and logistics industry, but lasting positive change will only come with changes in business and consumer habits. Put simply, businesses are influenced by consumer decisions. If there is continued consumer demand for services such as next day delivery, businesses will understandably continue to provide them, driving a rise in vehicle demand and emissions levels.
